Points of escape in the Guinean literary system and conflict as a way out in Auá: novela negra

This article analyzes Auá: novela negra (1934), by Fausto Duarte, based on a questioning of the category of “colonial literature” and the points of scape that structure Guinean literature criticism. In dialogue with the no-tion of discursive levels in Mudimbe, the investigation seeks to review the criticism surrounding Fausto Duarte, noting the arbitrariness, essentialism, and teleological readings guided by the ideal of nationhood. It argues that the position of Auá in the Guinean literary system results from a search for an African or Fula identity core that the novel, however, constantly puts in crisis, inscribing conflictuality as a key to reading the place of the work, and of Duarte, in the Guinean literary system.
