About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The journal Abril is a Portuguese and African Literatures' Study Nucleus' periodical – NEPA UFF. It aims at being a vehicle to promote national and international studies, reviews on literary works produced in Portugal and Portuguese language countries (Angola, Green Cape Islands, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Princípe), in a specific form or in comparatist approaches. It also aims at the presentation, by means of these studies, of contemporaneous researches on these literatures, based on fundamental theoretical-critical themes for its understanding.

Peer Review Process

The texts received are forwarded, in a doubled-blind process, to two reviewers from the Editorial Council and to ad hoc reviewers, specialists in the study area or theme in a process that assures the exemption of judgment, which should always be based on academic merit. In case there is diversion in the evaluation, the text is forwarded to a third reviewer, responsible for the final result. The following criteria are observed in the evaluation of articles and reviews: adequacy to the magazine theme; original thinking; relevance for the study area, bibliographical updating, objectivity and clarity of expression and use of technical-scientific language.

Publication Frequency

Abril publishes one volume yearly and two issues per volume, with publications forecasted for June and December.

Open Access Policy

This journal offers free and immediate access to its content, following the principle that the availability of scientific knowledge to the public provides the democratization of knowledge worldwide. The journal does not charge for submission, neither any article processing charges (APCs).

Journal History

The Portuguese and African Portuguese Language Literatures’ professors and researchers at the Federal Fluminense University had cherished a dream for a long time: to promote its scientific production in a journal, just like other colleagues from the institution, as well as their students. The time has come for the dream to come true: and Abril gets body, image and voice reminding us of other bodies, images and voices which rose on 25th April in 1974, creating the room for the party of liberty in Portugal. These voices guaranteed another party: the one of the African colonies’ liberation, which became independent in 1975. Hence, Abril is born under the sign of feast, disseminating it with joy in the concrete level of our academic and institutional experience.

If the magazine was the result of a dream and an accomplishment from professors due to their efforts, it is important to highlight that the fervor of a group of NEPA - Núcleo de Estudos de Literatura Portuguesa e Africana's students and researchers, who embraced the idea, highly contributed for the achievement of this same dream.

Therefore, Abril is the result of joint action between students and professors who chose to trail together the knowledge sedimentation path. On behalf of all of them, the current post-graduate student Diego Ferreira Marques, in charge of the graphic and virtual projects, is nominated to receive our acknowledgment.

In this first volume, a compilation of publications presented at the V NEPA Seminar of Contemporaneous Representations of Subjectivity is brought into a dossier format, in addition to essays produced by students especially for this first number to be launched during the next Seminar, in August 2008, which theme will be Memory, Landscape and Writing. We are looking forward to celebrating the launching of Abril.

Knowing that with Helder Macedo in his Partes da África that “a feast is a feast and no one can take it from us”, we must know put it in a different perspective, because we do not count with the physical presence of a colleague and mentor of the Magazine, José Carlos Barcellos, who was taken from life so soon and abruptly. The first edition of Abril is dedicated to him, as well as Haquira Osakabe, whose instigating and dense text voices the opening of the magazine. José Carlos e Haquira, for having enchanted themselves prematurely, you will continue to be part of our memory and writing, which are in the book of our affective and professional landscape.

Last but not least, we would like to reinforce that we are looking forward to receiving your contribution for the editions to come and for your virtual visit, to consolidate bonds more than merely academic.
