Details:
Why do certain literary texts make us laugh? What writing devices are employed to provoke humor? How can the critical strength of laughter in such texts be demonstrated? Can joy be a key topic of poetic creation? Starting from these initial questions, this call for papers for Abril invites submissions that analyze the multifarious relationships between literature and humor, literature and joy, to investigate what we might call a tradition of laughter, from troubadourism to contemporary times. Our aim is to foster a contemporary discussion around the founding concepts of the comedic, probing the distinctions between humor, laughter, irony, satire, and parody, as well as the mechanisms of textuality that underpin these distinctions, especially in poetic texts, but also in prose and theater. Without doubt, it is easier to perceive the effect of humor than it is to define it. And that is what this publication is about: showing that humor is worthy of serious investigation by exploring its complexity in literature and its variations and manifestations in Portuguese poetry, prose, and theater and in Portuguese-speaking African literatures. Comparative studies involving these literatures are also welcome.
