Abstract

Between Eça’s “realism” and Machado’s “modernism”, there is a great si­lence dedicated to the literary work of Aluísio Azevedo. Even before Lima Barreto and João do Rio, Azevedo was able to take the city of Rio de Janeiro as a landscape to be transformed by his work of fiction, which witnesses the existence of a city that would be destroyed by the future hygienist govern­ment of Pereira Passos. This essay will present the difference and the dislo­cation expressed in the work of an author for whom the urban geography is an obsessive theme.

Monica do Nascimento Figueiredo, UFRJ

Licenciada em Português-Literaturas pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1992); Bacharelado em Português-Literaturas pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1987); Especialização em Literatura Portuguesa Contemporânea pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1990); Mestrado em Literatura Portuguesa (Letras Vernáculas) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1994), com a dissertação: "De volta a casa, uma aventura da escrita num tempo de novas viagens", sobre a narrativa de João de Melo; Doutorado em Literatura Portuguesa (Letras Vernáculas) pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2002), com a tese: "No corpo, na casa e na cidade: a ficção ergue a morada possível", sobre as narrativas de Eça de Queirós, Helder Macedo, Lídia Jorge e José Saramago; Pós-Doutorado pela Universidade de Coimbra, onde desenvolveu o projeto de pesquisa: "E[ç]as Mulheres: um estudo da presença feminina na narativa de Eça de Queirós". O referido projeto foi premiado pela Cátedra Jorge de Sena/Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (2005); pela Fundação Universitária José Bonifácio, através do Programa Antônio Luís Vianna (2004); e recebeu Bolsa de Pós-Doutorado no Exterior pelo CNPQ. Atualmente, é Professora Associada da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro
