Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the double face of Love in two sonnets by Camões, from looking at the author’s historical period. It aims to discuss the methods and the reasons why, in the face of the troubled beginning of the Modern Era, Camões exposed, with his amorous lyricism, the modern disorders and chaos, and the desire for order and escape, which are marks of Mannerism, and, for such, the author used characteristics of medieval male-voiced love poetry of the Galician-Portuguese lyric movement. This is a bibliographical research, theoretically based in Hauser (1972; 1973; 1993), Rougemont (1988), Spina (1991), Paz (1994) and Sarai- va & Lopes (2010).
