Abstract

Based on the title of the book that Eduardo Lourenço published in 1976, O Fascismo nunca existiu, the aim of this study is to reflect on the difficulty felt by the Portuguese to think deeply about the experience of 48 years of Estado Novo. According to Eduardo Lourenço, without carrying out this meditation, it would be impossible for the democratic regime that emerged from the 25th of April to create its own imaginary. The study ends with an attempt to assess whether today, 50 years after the “Revolução dos Cravos”, this meditation has been done or still remains to be done.
