This paper investigates the journalistic production of Eça de Queirós present in As Farpas, highlighting his satirical critique of 19th-century Portuguese society. In his chronicles, the author exposes social masks using laughter as a tool for awareness, based on the contradictions captured, for example, in current political and journalistic discourses. Taking as a basis some texts from the work Uma campanha alegre, the article analyzes how Eça’s proposal to unmask hypocrisy through ridicule (something that would also be present in the author’s novelistic style) is structured in the dynamic discourse of the chronicle.
