The non-desire for motherhood in Brazil: a descriptive analysis
Abstract
Currently, 37% of Brazilian women do not want to become mothers. This study attempted to determine the factors for this decision. It was a quantitative study in which an online questionnaire with 83 questions about not wanting to become a mother was made available. 872 answered questionnaires were analysed and a descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The sample consisted of both black and white, highly educated heterosexual women, mainly from the Southeast and Midwest regions of Brazil. Some factors stood out in general, especially appreciation of professional life and nonconformity to gender ideals. No significant differences were found between white and black women.
Keywords: woman; non-maternity; genre.
