Abstract

This study investigates the relevance of reactivating the Araçuaí Municipal Airport, located in the Vale do Jequitinhonha, as a catalyst for regional socioeconomic development. Regional aviation, particularly in large countries like Brazil, is crucial for promoting connectivity and economic growth in isolated areas. The Araçuaí Airport, deactivated since the early 2000s, holds significant potential to boost the local economy, especially with the recent expansion of lithium mining in the region. The study employs a robust methodological approach, including literature review, empirical data collection, and technical analysis of existing infrastructure. Population projections suggest a significant increase in the local population by 2060, driven by the intensification of mining activities. Additionally, the definition of the operational influence area and the calculation of the airport's competitiveness index indicate that Araçuaí has the potential to become a strategic logistical hub, directly benefiting neighboring municipalities. This study highlights the need for investments in airport infrastructure as a crucial step towards the sustainable development of the Vale do Jequitinhonha.
