Abstract

The notion of reparation, central to the political-moral history of the contemporary world, acquired new meanings and effects after the Second World War. From then on, the situations considered critical and subject to “reparation” expanded significantly, as did the demands and conflicts surrounding the adjusted forms of compensation for the damage caused by accidents, disasters, crises and catastrophes suffered by those who consider themselves “victims” deserving of reparation. The presentation deals with this process and highlights the perspective that social sciences and, in particular, anthropology have constructed on reparation as a subject of inquiry. From this perspective, we keep the meaning of “reparation” open, as a key to problematizing the term’s mobilization in different domains, such as aesthetic, psychological, symbolic, economic etc. Additionally, we highlight the central issues that the discipline has addressed in ethnographic works on the matter, as well as the specific contributions offered by the six articles presented in this dossier.
