The ludic in the city: Flutua Collective and the “Flying Birutas”

This article explores the intersections between the ludic and urban space through the trajectory of the Flutua Collective, an interdisciplinary group that conducts educational workshops and inflatable interventions made from plastic waste. Grounded in theoretical frameworks of Johan Huizinga (1938/2019), Henri Lefebvre (1970/2001), and Situationist Unitary Urbanism, the study examines the ludic as a core structuring element of urban life, intrinsically linked to experimentation, citizen participation and the reinvention of the common spaces. Furthermore, it analyzes the collective's practices, specifically its inflatable installations and Birutas (wind vanes) workshops held in both public and institutional settings. By focusing on the intervention at the MASP Vão Livre (open plaza), the research underscores the ludic as a catalyst for critical, pedagogical, and imaginative engagement within the contemporary city.
