Abstract

Dostoevsky's work has been revisited by psychoanalytic studies, since Freud, as allegories to illustrate conditions experienced by the human psyche, including the melancholic state. The short story The Dream of a Ridiculous Man provides some possibilities for thinking about the theme, discussed here through the notions of inhibition and the feeling of sameness. Based on the choice of statements in the short story and theoretical-conceptual correlations from Psychoanalysis, we can see the intertwining of inhibition and sameness with aspects that construct the meaning of melancholy, such as the perception of emptiness, nothingness and the lack of meaning in the world as traits of narcissistic impoverishment, of a fatalistic, masochistic stance and of inaction justified by a faded libidinal investment. Despite this, the short story alludes to the potential of human relationships as propitiators of new affections that can promote changes brought about by the possibilities of connections with the Other.
