Abstract

Conceived in 1974, ten years after the beginning of the Brazilian Military
Dictatorship and at the height of the developmental euphoria of the so-called “Brazilian economic miracle”, Iracema, uma transa amazônica co-directed by Jorge Bodanzky and
Orlando Senna (1974), puts on the scene a major project of the “National Development Plan” located in a National Security region, the unfinished Transamazônia highway. In the gesture of addressing the region’s problems and producing images endowed with a critical, ironic and contesting point of view, the film defines an attitude of film counterinformation. In view of the various problems and paths of reading raised by Iracema, uma transa amazônica, we are interested in observing some strong moments in the film that I propose to name, after Jean Epstein, “moments of truth”. Through this heuristic approach, the article addresses some sequences of the film whose “moments of truth” are matters of critical reflection.
