Edgar Morin: archive, self-writing, and (auto)biography

This article presents ongoing research exploring the relationship between biography, archives, and self-writing in the work of Edgar Morin, based on data from his diaries and memoirs held at the “Fonds Edgar Morin” of the Institut de Mémorie et d’Edition Contemporaine (IMEC) in Caen, France. The article analyzes Morin's autobiographical writing situated at the boundaries between memory, fiction, and reality. To this end, we utilize five sets of archives: 1) the collection of working notes; 2) the scientific collection; 3) the editorial collection; 4) the academic collection; and 5) the biographical collection. The methodology employed was that of complexity, which, among other approaches, considers the inseparability of the imaginary and reality, or of imagined life and lived life, and combined bibliographic research with documentary prospecting at IMEC. The conclusion is that Morin's intellectual history reveals the inseparability of his theoretical, essayistic, and memoiristic productions.
