About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Contracampo – Brazilian Journal of Media Studies is a quarterly publication of the Graduate Programme in Communication Studies (PPGCOM) at Fluminense Federal University (UFF). Its mission is to contribute to critical reflection within the field of Media Studies, being a space for dissemination of research and scientific thought. Our journal is thus directed at the academic audience in the field of Applied Social Sciences, with emphasis on Communication Studies. It is open to researchers around the world linked to the field of Communication Studies and related subjects through the publication of articles, essays, reviews and interviews, original or unpublished in Portuguese.

Peer Review Process

Contracampo Journal accepts unpublished papers, in Portuguese, Spanish or English, about communication and related areas, from researchers from higher education institutions. Doctoral and masters students can only submitt papers if they are written in co-authorship with PhDs. Papers submitted are initially evaluated by the Editorial Board, who verifies if they are in accordance with the selection criteria, which are exposed in the journal's editorial standards. After the Desk Review, every paper is sent to two or more specialists in the work's subject and, after that, a final decision for publication will be made by the Editorial Board, based on these double-blind review assessments, keeping the anonymity of both the author and the referees. If there is any disagreement between the two initial evaluators, the manuscript will be evaluated by a third one and the final decision will be made by the editorial team, based on the content of these evaluations. In addition to the papers, Contracampo Journal also receives interviews and reviews of academic books recently published (in Brazil or outside the country) that are relevant to Communication Studies. Reviews received will be evaluated only by the Editorial Team. We emphasize that 90% of the evaluators in each issue are not linked to Fluminense Federal University.

Papers deposited in preprint repositories, such as SocArxiv, or present and published in conference proceedings are considered unpublished, provided that the manuscripts obtain adaptations as a result of the discussions about the works. If the first version of the text has been published in proceedings or in a preprint repository, the information should be included in the submission metadata. In these cases, the evaluation will be carried out in a Simple-Blind Review.

New revisions may be requested by the journal based on peer reviews. Translations are not considered unpublished. The papers are received in a continuous flow and can be published in up to one year. There is an interval of two years between publications by the same author. Exceptional cases will be evaluated by the editorial board.

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, following the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
