Abstract

This article explores how the operational and techno-economic logics of infrastructural platforms have an impact on the openness policies (TKACZ, 2015) of projects that, although they claim to be self-governing, depend on advertising income. We present a case study of the multifandom wiki TV Tropes, with an emphasis on its historical tensions with Google between 2010 and 2024. By analyzing the process of reorganization of the wiki's policies, we observe the creation of categories such as "Safe for Google" and "Not Safe for Google" and the internal discussions about transparency, morality and gender issues. The work reveals the complexity of balancing the policies of infrastructural platforms, commercial demands and the ideals of openness that drive collaborative fan projects.
