Abstract

The wave of denialism that has taken over Brazil in the last four years found itself in the middle of a pandemic. The goal of this study is to analyze the actions and omissions of the Federal government in the fields of education and childhood from 2020 to 2021. The empirical base includes bibliographic research, legal documents, specialized studies, union demonstrations, and national press reports. The article argues that the pandemic was not experienced by everyone in the same way, as families with higher purchasing power and children in private schools for higher income classes had ample access to the internet and synchronous and dynamic Remote Teaching. However, the majority of the population had to fight for survival in situations of social vulnerability and a sharp loss of livelihoods. In addition, they had to deal with a harsh reality, as their children's public schools were unable to overcome digital exclusion due to the absence of compatible public policies with the gravity and temporal extent of the pandemic. The research carried out covering the federal network and broader studies allows us to conclude that online education experiences reached only a restricted group of people, putting on the country's educational agenda immense challenges to overcome the deepening of educational inequality in the pandemic context. Highlighting the need for Public Policies that enable the active search for dropouts and educational measures to face unequal schooling.
