Paulo Freire is a local and international reference in popular education. This article analyzes his work, initially questioning how the terms oppression and liberation developed by him could support contemporary reflections and actions. Dialoguing mainly with the academic literature published in English, some criticisms of Freire and his engagement with the concepts of class, gender and race are also discussed. Finally, the relationship between politics and education is explored, indicating the importance of problematizing education in the experience of witnessing difference and in developing the virtues of openness and humility.
