Desde finais da década de 1980 emergem na cena pública brasileira as comunidades quilombolas, constituindo-se como novos sujeitos coletivos e grupos étnicos, num momento histórico de significativas mudanças nos conflitos e lutas sociais no Brasil e na América Latina. Uma das características distintivas da emergência etno-política quilombola é o caráter territorial das lutas, daí que o presente trabalho se proponha a compreender os processos de territorialização protagonizados por estas comunidades, relacionando três categorias profundamente imbricadas: identidade étnica, movimento social e lutas por afirmação territorial. As reflexões teórico-conceituais são complementadas com um estudo de caso, onde se expõe o processo vivenciado nos últimos quinze anos pela comunidade quilombola de Acauã, no Rio Grande do Norte (RN).
