Resumo: Considerando os mercados financeiros como construções institucionais e geográficas, este artigo propõe uma abordagem territorial da financeirização da economia e das regiões. A financeirização refere-se à construção e exploração da mobilidade/liquidez do capital (CORPATAUX; CREVOISIER, 2005), o que resulta em uma distinção entre as esferas real e financeira da economia. Essa separação funcional e espaço-temporal deve ser considerada em diversas escalas. No nível microinstitucional, mais especificamente em termos de governança corporativa, há uma separação entre os investidores (acionistas e gestores de fundos) e a função empreendedora. Na escala macroinstitucional, ocorre uma separação entre os espaços de arrecadação de recursos, os espaços de governança do capital e os espaços de investimento. Essas configurações resultam do crescente e contínuo processo de financeirização de empresas, setores, regiões e nações desde meados da década de 1980, ou seja, de sua progressiva integração aos circuitos de mobilidade/liquidez do capital. Os mercados financeiros adquiriram uma crescente autonomia em relação à economia real, e a cidade global passou a ocupar uma posição cada vez mais preponderante, suprimindo a governança tradicional de regiões e nações. Este artigo termina com uma síntese das principais mudanças desde os anos oitenta até à atualidade no que respeita à evolução das principais teorias e espaços do sistema financeiro.
