Thematic Issue: Past, Present and Future of Linguistic Historiography: Assessments, Challenges, and Perspectives

This thematic issue of Gragoatá aims to foster critical and innovative discussions on the past, present, and future of historiographical studies of language and linguistics. Particular attention will be given to methodological, epistemological, and theoretical questions that contribute to the advancement of the field and to dialogue with broader areas of language studies. Original articles addressing, among others, the following topics are welcome:

  1. Methods and Techniques in Linguistic Historiography 
  • Corpus-based approaches;
    • Digital humanities and computational methods;
    • Bibliometric and network analyses;
    • Philological and editorial methodologies;
    • Terminological and conceptual analysis.
  1. Concepts and Categories in Linguistic Historiography
  • Tradition, innovation, influence, reception, and transmission;
    • Scientific paradigms and epistemological frameworks;
    • Linguistic concepts in historical perspective;
    • Historiographical categories and analytical models.
  1. Histories of the Language Sciences
  • Histories of grammatical traditions;
    • Lexicography, language description, and language teaching;
    • Missionary linguistics and colonial linguistic studies;
    • Indigenous, African, and minoritized linguistic traditions;
    • Transnational circulation of linguistic ideas.
  1. Interdisciplinary Perspectives
  • Linguistic Historiography and the History of Science;
    • Intellectual History and Cultural History;
    • Translation studies and the circulation of knowledge;
    • Glottopolitics, language policies, and linguistic ideologies;
    • Interfaces with the Digital Humanities.
  1. Future Perspectives and Metahistoriographical Reflection
  • Theoretical and methodological challenges;
    • Open science and scholarly communication;
    • Internationalization of historiographical research;
    • Teaching Linguistic Historiography;
    • New agendas and emerging fields of research.

 

This thematic issue seeks contributions that offer critical reflections on the discipline itself and related fields, discussing their methods, concepts, and future possibilities. Purely descriptive studies focused exclusively on individual authors or works, without broader methodological or historiographical implications, are, in principle, outside the scope of this issue.

 

The editors particularly encourage contributions that promote international dialogue and comparative perspectives, as well as research stemming from different historiographical traditions and scholarly communities.
