Between the power and the duty: involved factors in the expression of modality in the speeches of Presidential Inauguration
Keywords:
Deontic modality. Volitive modality. Political discourse. FunctionalismAbstract
This paper analyses the inaugural speeches of Brazilian presidents elected between 1990 and 2007, in order to demonstrate the determinations of interactive context over the expression of deontic and volitive modalities. The analysis points out the similarities in usage due to the position of the enunciator and the differences due to the specificities in each interaction context.
