A proposal for an evolutionary approach to linguistic change

Abstract

In this text the biolinguistic model is presented and discussed, according to Givón (2002). This model presents confluence points with linguistic variation and change model (LABOV, 1972; 1994; 2001). The relation between the two models provides a socio-biolinguistic analysis, arising from an evolutionary approach of linguistic change.

Professora vice-coordenadora do curso de Letras do Campus Universitário Prof. Alberto Carvalho da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Dentre outros, publicou, em co-autoria com Edair Gorski e Maria Alice Tavares, o capítulo “Restrições de natureza cognitivo-comunicativa: marcação vs. expressividade retórica em fenômenos variáveis” no livro Português Brasileiro II: contato lingüístico, heterogeneidade e história; e o artigo, “O papel da freqüência de uso na gramaticalização de acho (que) e parece (que) marcadores de dúvida na fala de Florianópolis”, na revista Veredas v. 7, n. 1.
