Abstract

This paper consists of an analysis of the word order change that characterizes the uses of manner adverbs formed with the suffix -mente in letters written in Brazil in the 18th century and in the 19th century. The analysis aims to show, within this period of time, the gradual disappearance of the tendency of these adverbs of occurring in preverbal positions, which had already been detected in the early historical evolution of Portuguese.
