Semantic-cognitive aspects of intensification
Keywords:
intensity – cognitive semantics – metaphorAbstract
The present paper aims to focuse the semantic and cognitive aspects of the intensity processes. Thus takes the theoretic accounts of Cognitive Semantics, to which language encodes the cognitive schemas structured from our experience with reality. Linguistic symbols reflect the metaphorical combinations between more “concrete” domains, acquired from the way how we conceptualize our relation with the world, and those of more abstract nature. From this point of view, we claim that intensifiers are mostly metaphorical constructions based on analogical relations with some more “concrete” concepts such as quantity, size/dimension, localization (horizontal or vertical), weight/strength and so on.Downloads
