This paper focuses on the early period of Portuguese linguistic colonization in Africa through an analysis of the Chronica do Descobrimento e a Conquista da Guiné writen by Gomes Eannes Azurara in 1453. This work of Azurara is taken as the main text to understand the linguistic ideas emerging from the first contacts between the Portuguese and the African peoples. It is compared with other texts from the sarne period, such as Royal orders and papal bulls.Downloads
