Abstract

On the basis of an analysis of the film Shoah, by Claude Lanzmann, as well as of Paul Celan's poetry, this essay discusses problematic modalities of representation in contemporary culture. For many contemporary artists, the denial of representation is the only means not to betray an experience which demands and, at the same time, resists interpretation. The study of such kinds of poetry and film will lead us to a conflicting domain between art and history.

Arthur Nestrovski, PUC-SP

Professor titular no Programa de Pós-graduação em Comunicação e Semiótica da PUC / SP, com doutorado em Literatura e Música pela Universidade de Iowa, é autor de Ironias da modernidade (São Paulo: Ática, 1996), Notas musicais (São Paulo: Publifolha, 2000) e Palavra e sombra (São Paulo: Cosac & Naify, 2004), e organizador de Figuras do Brasil (São Paulo: Publifolha, 2001) e Música popular brasileira hoje (São Paulo: Publifolha, 2002). Escreveu também seis livros para crianças; entre eles, Bichos que existem e bichos que não existem (São Paulo: Cosac & Naify, 2002), Prêmio jabuti da Câmara Brasileira do Livro, em duas categorias: Melhor Livro Infantil e Livro do Ano/Ficção.
