Abstract

Within the little explored field of film sound, resides an even more obscure question: can silences be understood as integrant part of film sound materials? Valued by several areas of knowledge during the twentieth century, silence was also recognized discretely in film theory, by few analysts, as a carrier of meaning in film narratives. Understanding silences not as mere absences of significance, but as a fundamental part of a discourse, one can find and analyse silences in film narrative, acknowledging its role in the film sound construction, as important as voices, noises and music.
