Abstract

This essay maps out the conceptual story of the notion of magical realism, from its early formulation in the book Nach-expressionismus, Magischer Realismus: Probleme die Neuesten Europäischen Malerei, by Franz Roh, until its promotion within the debates on the Latin-American literature of the Boom. It is a discussion of a traveling theory that confronts the visual domain of plastic arts with the literary domain in an attempt to define a representative approximation to modern reality.

Karl Erik Schollhammer, Universidade de Aarhus / PUC-Rio

Doutor em Semiótica pela Universidade de Aarhus (Dinamarca), é professor associado de Literatura Comparada e Teoria da Literatura da PUC-Rio e pesquisador do CNPq. Entre suas publicações mais recentes figuram os seguintes volumes, de que é colaborador e co-organizador: As linguagens da violência (Rio de Janeiro: Rocco, 2000), Literatura e cultura (Rio de Janeiro: Ed.
