This paper deals with the status of authorship and reading in the digital world, analysing the impact not only of new technologies, but also of new legal frameworks for writers and readers. New technologies bring about new legal questions which also generate new technological answers. The emergence of Copyright Protection and Management Systems is an answer to the need of copyright holders, but it is becoming a problem to the general user who wants to have access to softwares, databases, texts etc. As we will show, the legal framework for this situation is basically American, because the US government has been very successful in imposing its point of view at the World Intellectual Property Organization.
