In this paper we seek to understand the meanings produced by language in its relationship with the subjects in two situations: teaching Portuguese as mother tongue in the suburbs of a large city and teaching Portuguese as hosting language. From the perspective of Materialistic Discourse Analysis and works that consider the language from a discursive perspective, we will ponder upon the tension and resistance processes of the subjects – be they from the suburbs or refugees – in relation to the language taught to them.
