The act of language according to semiolinguistics: implications, explanations, and practical applications

Abstract

In this article, we will comment on one of the important concepts of semiolinguistics, a theory created by the linguist P. Charaudeau, which we have used in various corpora for over 20 years. We will discuss what the theorist calls an act of language and its implications and practical applications. To this end, we will illustrate our comments with statements from the book Esquisse pour une auto-analyse (2004) by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. We chose the writings of this author because they are integrated, in a certain way, into our current research on discourse analysis and life narratives. Moreover, the discourse analysis proposed by Charaudeau has an interface with sociology. Our aim is to show how concepts from semiolinguistics are important and practical as they allow multiple interpretations of different writings.

Ida Lucia Machado, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Mestre em Língua e Literatura Francesa pela USP, Doutora em Letras pela Universidade de Toulouse II (França), hoje Univ. Jean Jaurès. Realizou dois pós-doutorados em Análise do Discurso em Paris XIII e Paris III (França). Fundou e é membro do Núcleo de Análise do Discurso da FALE/UFMG. Atualmente faz parte do quadro de professores permanentes da Pós-Graduação em Estudos Linguísticos da FALE/UFMG, onde ministra cursos de Análise do Discurso de tendência francesa e orienta mestrandos e doutorandos. Suas pesquisas, com base em estudos linguísticos-discursivos, são centradas em narrativas de vida, estratégias argumentativas (ironia e paródia) e identidades enunciativas. É bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq.
