Imagens de uma metrópole do século (Rio diverso múltiplo)
Keywords:
Rio de Janeiro, broken city, exclusionary modernization, XX century, physical order/symbolic orderAbstract
Cities in Latin America are ruled by an organizing reason revealed in a hierarchical social arder and connected to a double life - the physical (material) and the symbolic (sign) order, as emphasized by Ángel Rama in A Cidade das Letras. Based on these considerations, this arlicle is aimed at searching the image of "broken city" for Rio de Janeiro as a constructed discourse made by narratives from two moments of the XX century (the begin announcing the modernization and the end appropriating the image through a postmodern view). From a metropolis of the XX century produced by the reforms of the first decade, with an exclusionary logic, to the metropolis of the last decade, this city reveals itself as a permanent stage for a war of narratives.
