This paper discusses two questions: language contact and multilinguism in Brazil. First of all, it presents a typology of the several types of language contact, together with some of its outcomes, especially pidgins and creoles. It also tackles the question of prior creolization, arguing that it is impossible to prove being doubt whether there has been a Portuguese creole or not. Finally, it offers na overview of Brazilian researches on language contact.
