Abstract

This paper discusses two questions: language contact and multilinguism in Brazil. First of all, it presents a typology of the several types of language contact, together with some of its outcomes, especially pidgins and creoles. It also tackles the question of prior creolization, arguing that it is impossible to prove being doubt whether there has been a Portuguese creole or not. Finally, it offers na overview of Brazilian researches on language contact.

Professor Titular de Lingüística da UnB, com Mestrado em Lingüística pela USP e Doutorado na Alemanha: Atua na linha de pesquisa da Crioulística e de Contato de Línguas. Autor das obras O crioulo português de Guiné-Bissau (Hamburgo) e Introdução ao estudo das línguas crioulas e pidgins (Editora EDUNB). E presidente da Associação Brasileira de Estudos Crioulos e Similares.
