Uma abordagem pancrônica da sintaxe portuguesa
Keywords:
grammaticalization, linguistic stability, unidirectionality, panchrony, linguistic changeAbstract
Based on the principles of grammaticalization theory (Givón, 1990; Hopper & Traugott, 1993), this article examines aspects of clause combining in different gramatical constructions (adverbial and adjectival clauses; constructions with the verbs querer (want), mandar (tell, arder), deixar (allow, let), poder (can, may) and ver (see), in some cases in different synchronies of the Portuguese language. Not only linguistic change is observed in the data examined, but also a strong tendency towards the permanence of certain constructions and uses. Focusing mainly on the forces that motivate linguistic stability and continuity and that manifest themselves in each new instance of communication, the article proposes to review the hypothesis of unidirectionality in semantic and syntactic change in the grammaticalization process.
