Brazilian literature experienced renewed momentum abroad
at the beginning of the 21st century, alongside the country’s
growing global prominence. Numerous new translations
and retranslations of classics appeared during this period.
In France, the publishing house Anacaona stands as
a notable example of this trend. In 2016, it published
Kéro, un reportage maudit, by Plínio Marcos, originally
released in Brazil in 1976. The work recounts the violent
adolescence of Jerônimo da Piedade. The text captures the
rhythm of Jerônimo’s speech, using rewritten aphorisms and
neologisms to revive the underworld of Santos in the 1970s.
To reflect on the translation of the linguistic complexity
of this novel by Plínio Marcos, we propose an analysis of
the translation choices in Kéro and their implications for
the construction of Brazilian marginal literature’s image
in France.
