A PRESENÇA DA CHINA NA AMÉRICA LATINA:
DESAFIO À HEGEMONIA ESTADUNIDENSE OU APROXIMAÇÃO PRAGMÁTICA?

Desde o início da década 2000, tem-se observado uma crescente presença da China nos países latino-americanos, sobretudo em termos econômicos. Além de ter se tornado um motivo de preocupação para os Estados Unidos, tal fenômeno tem sido objeto de discussões na esfera acadêmica, no âmbito do qual tem se questionado, entre outros fatores, se o incremento das relações sino-latino-americanas pode representar uma ameaça à hegemonia estadunidense na região. Diante disso, o presente artigo busca analisar até que ponto o aumento do engajamento da China na América Latina pode ser interpretado como uma situação de desafio hegemônico aos Estados Unidos, partindo da premissa de que a noção de hegemonia se encontra intrinsecamente vinculada a relações de caráter militar. Conclui-se que, embora o envolvimento chinês no âmbito militar na região tenha evoluído nos últimos anos, ele é ainda bastante modesto, não sendo possível – ao menos por enquanto – identificar uma ameaça à hegemonia dos Estados Unidos na América Latina.
