Abstract

There is ample literature on the influence of institutions in adopting environmentally friendly practices. However, there is no research on the differences between the environmental institutions of the Brazilian states. Besides, this topic has not been studied in logistics terminals. What is the influence of state institutions on the environmental management of logistics terminals? In our data analysis, we performed Poisson regression. We found that state institutions influence the environmental performance at the terminals. However, the positive impact was found only in the institution “tax incentives”, but a negative impact was found by the institution “scope of environmental legislation”. Despite being contradictory, these results are in agreement with the literature. The negative impact of “the scope of environmental legislation” on environmental management indicates that environmental legislation and its enforcement are not fully integrated in developing countries, such as Brazil.
