Piracy plays an ambiguous role: it creates jobs for people on the margins of the formal market and offers affordable products due to the high taxes on the originals. This raises ethical complexities in the consumption and organization of pirated products. Thus, the aim of this article is to understand how the daily practices of the pirate market are organized in the commercial center of Fortaleza, Ceará. The study used systematic observations, field diaries and in-depth interviews. It uncovered a set of cunning practices, including mafia aspects, subsistence strategies and camouflage tactics, which shape the pirate market.
