Silenced voices: colonialism, gender, and the exclusion of African women in Portuguese literature

This article examines the mechanisms of exclusion of African women’s voices in Portuguese colonial literature and their echoes in post-independence cultural policies. Through a qualitative and critical approach, combining postcolonial theory, decolonial feminisms, and sociology of culture, it investigates how institutional devices — such as contests, laws, and archives — naturalized the erasure of authors like Noémia de Sousa and Alda Lara. Results reveal that the coloniality of power sustained gender and racial hierarchies even after independence, with recognition policies that remain selective. The study argues that epistemic justice requires not only canonical inclusion but the dismantling of colonial literary legitimacy criteria.
