The aim of this article is to discuss the portrayals of Portuguese colonialism conveyed in three contemporary Portuguese novels: Os Retornados: Um Amor Nunca se Esquece (2008) by Júlio Magalhães, Sagal: Um Herói Feito em África (2012) by António Brito, and O Segredo de Lourenço Marques (2024) by Eduardo Pires Coelho. These three narratives, generally laudatory of colonialism and of the actions of the Portuguese army during the Colonial Wars, are part of a broader landscape of memory disputes surrounding Portuguese colonialism, particularly within the cultural sphere. The novels present themselves as memory documents, claiming a kind of historical authority that grants them a status of truth. To reflect on their relationship with colonial literature, I draw on authors such as Inocência Mata, Francisco Noa, and Pires Laranjeira, among others. For the intersections between literature, history, and memory, I reference Reinhart Koselleck, Aleida Assmann, and others.
