This paper aims to understand the work Nyaka (Humus) — poemas bárbaros (1942), by Caetano Campo, a Portuguese writer based in Mozambique, reflecting on the uses of the word “humus” in the context of African literatures and on the dialogue it establishes with the work Húmus (1917), by Raul Brandão, a Portuguese writer. To this end, the paper will discuss Caetano Campo’s critical inscription in the history of Mozambican literature, the correspondence and uses of the word “humus,” akin both to a Lusotropicalist purpose in the criticism of Amândio César and to a revolutionary meaning in the poetry of Agostinho Neto. Next, the paper will focus on the constitution of the aesthetic meaning of “humus” or “nyaka” within Campo’s work and, finally, will investigate the possible dialogues that can be established between the work from Mozambique and the work of Brandão.
