The article aims to present findings of a preliminary research on the aesthetics of thinness in Portuguese romantic literature. Working from a feminist framework, it is argued that the romantic ideal of a thin, pale woman is deeply related to the preservation of patriarchal structures in post-revolutionary European society, which had a real impact on women’s diet in the nineteenth century, including in Portugal.Downloads
