Abstract

This study investigates the journalistic coverage of the occupation of the Landless Workers Movement (MST) at Usina São João, in Campos dos Goytacazes (RJ), in April 1997, through comparative analysis of local newspapers, "Monitor Campista", "A Notícia" and "Folha da Manhã". The main objective is to understand how the press treated the MST's demands and the discursive strategies adopted, reflecting the ideological divisions of the time. The research adopts a monthly approach to newspaper publications, using as a documentary corpus the editions of the three newspapers, originating from research in the Municipal Public Archive of Campos dos Goytacazes. The analysis of this episode, emblematic of social struggles in Brazil, demonstrates how the media has the possibility of shaping historical memory and public understanding of events, emphasizing the importance of plural and ethical media in dealing with sensitive issues, such as agrarian reform, to strengthen democracy and social justice.
