Abstract

From a necessary articulation between the fields of health and environmental disasters, this article aims to identify the impacts of these phenomena, particularly involving flooding and inundation, on the health of residents in Santo Eduardo, the 13th district of Campos dos Goytacazes, as well as to analyze access to available health facilities in the area. To achieve this, specific objectives were established: to examine the intersection between health and environmental disasters in the literature, to verify the emergence and worsening of diseases related to disasters, to identify the health facilities in the region, and to evaluate the community's access to these services. The methodology employed includes quantitative and qualitative research, with the collection of secondary data, semi-structured interviews, and survey questionnaires. The results indicate that the residents of Santo Eduardo mainly suffer from psychosocial diseases as a consequence of environmental disasters. Although the community has a health care unit, participants indicate a need for improvements in the services provided. The study reveals that, in the field of Applied Social Sciences, the discussion regarding the relationship between health and environmental disasters is still limited, highlighting the need to broaden this discussion in order to provide new contributions to the topic and support the development of more effective public policies aligned with the social realities of populations affected by disasters.
