Abstract

This article aimed to demonstrate how policies for the democratization of access to higher education, such as REUNI and affirmative action programs, are reflected in the changing profile of students at Federal Institutions of Higher Education (IFES). To this end, we examined data on race/ethnicity, gender, income, and other characteristics of incoming students at ESR/UFF in the year 2023, using intersectionality as the main analytical tool, as we believe that isolated data cannot fully reveal the relationships inherent to them. As a methodological criterion, the study utilized data from the survey on the socioeconomic, cultural, and health profile of undergraduate students admitted to the Institute of Social Sciences and Regional Development (ESR). Accordingly, this paper sought to elucidate the characteristics of the university student as a social subject in contemporary times.
