Heitor Lima and intellectual mediation in the First Republic: between literature, law and the press

Abstract

This article proposes an analysis of the trajectory of Heitor Lima (1887–1945), an intellectual active in the fields of literature, law and journalism during the first decades of the 20th century in Brazil. Based on the concept of the “mediating intellectual,” it seeks to understand how Lima mobilised different spaces of sociability — literary salons, the Rio de Janeiro press, legal institutions — to intervene in the public debates of his time, with an emphasis on his activism for the legalisation of divorce. The study, based on printed documentation and theoretical references from intellectual history, is part of the perspective that peripheral trajectories offer relevant keys to understanding the symbolic and political disputes of the First Republic.

    Possui graduação em História pela Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (2001), Mestrado (2004) e Doutorado (2011) em História pela Universidade Federal Fluminense. Atualmente é professor titular do Instituto Federal do Sudeste de Minas Gerais - Campus Juiz de Fora e do Programa de Pós-graduação em História Social da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro/Faculdade de Formação de Professores e desenvolve estágio de pós-doutorado na Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora. É associado da Associação Nacional de História, participante de projetos do Laboratório Cidade e Poder da Universidade Federal Fluminense e membro do Grupo de Pesquisa/CNPq "História, Poder e Ideias Políticas" da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.
