MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS AND LOW POLITICAL REPRESENTATION: AN ANALYSIS OF THE 2024 ELECTORAL DISPUTE IN ARAUCÁRIA-PR

This article analyzes the 2024 municipal elections in Araucária (PR), focusing on the race for the Executive branch and the composition of the new City Council legislature. Drawing on official data from IBGE, TRE-PR, and TSE, as well as theoretical frameworks, the study examines the city’s history, the profile of the electorate and the candidates, and how the political-electoral system reproduces structural inequalities related to gender, race, and class. Although the election featured a formal plurality of candidacies, traditional power structures persisted, marked by the predominance of white men and the absence of elected women. By reflecting on the limits of political representation and the institutional mechanisms of exclusion, the article highlights the urgent need to rethink political, institutional, and cultural practices that sustain democratic inequality at the local level.
