Abstract

The text aims to contribute to the formulation of general sociological hypotheses to study reparation as a specific social operation. By reparation we understand everything that, for people who have been victims of damage, has the value of adequate retribution for what affected them. By taking victims’ normativity seriously, we place their point of view at the center of our investigation. Likewise, we point out the relevance of studying the relationships that victims establish with the actors they encounter during their reparation process (legal professionals, journalists, medical or psychological experts, etc.). Our research was based on an exhaustive case study. We have followed the collective trajectory of repairing a public health disaster over a long period of time. We discovered that the regulation of victims seeking reparation seems to be structured around three major expectations: the restoration of people, truth and justice regarding the event, and the compensation (not only economic) for the damage. With this approach we intend to contribute to the production of sociological comparisons, in order to better understand the different forms that reparation takes nowadays in various areas such as technological accidents, environmental catastrophes, political violence or gender violence.
