Abstract

The article harnesses the concept of “affective atmospheres” in order to critically rethink the relationship between individual subjectivities and intersubjective situations within the social sciences. At the subjective sphere, affects are presented as experiential states whose general and diffuse quality imbues them with the capacity to impregnate, with their own tonality, the individual’s transactions with her environment. At the intersubjective sphere, affective atmospheres are taken as able to traverse and impregnate the states of affect of the individuals embedded within a social situation. The paper approaches the relations between individual affects and situational affective atmospheres as empirically variable, enveloping the whole continuum between the ideal-typical extremes of the individual’s absolute permeability and impermeability in face of her situations. Developing the concepts of “intercorporeality” and “interaffectivity” as constitutive of the idea of “affective atmosphere”, the text criticizes overly intellectualistic conceptions of intersubjectivity within the social sciences. Finally, the affective dissonances individuals may face in relation to the atmospheres of affects in their environments are examined as a case study.
